COMPTON METHODIST CHURCH, PLYMOUTH

SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN & YOUNG PEOPLE - Policy and Guidelines

Our Policy:

The people of Compton Methodist Church have a deep concern for the wholeness and well being of each individual and aim to provide a safe environment for all who come into contact with the Church and its organisations. It is the responsibility of each Individual participating in the life of the Church, not only those directly concerned with the work of children and young people, to prevent abuse, and to act appropriately if it is discovered or suspected or when good practice is not being followed.

All users of the premises, as well as organisations under the control of the Church Council, are required to adhere to this policy statement and to note the guidelines, following their own procedures as appropriate.

A Summary of our Guidelines, where they apply to occasional users of our premises.
(The longer version can be found on the hall noticeboard.)

1.     A minimum of 2 adults should be present at all times.
Respect the ratio of adults to children

  • under school age 1:3
  • primary school age 1: 8
  • secondary school age 1:12

Hold a list/register of everyone present (adults and children).

2.    Observe adults as they work with children.
If there is cause for concern, or if children disclose abuse (physical, emotional or sexual), be prepared to pass information to police or social services.

Listen calmly, and treat seriously, any allegations made.

Do not share the allegation with the adult about whom it is made.

3.    Be aware that the First Aid kit in the hall is on the wall near the door. Details of accidents and/or treatment provided should be recorded in the accident book, which is inside the First Aid box.

4.    In the event of fire, phone 999.

  • Evacuate the premises immediately, checking that every room (including toilets) has been evacuated.
  • Gather on the grass on the Revel Road side of the church building.
  • Check names against your list/register.
  • On no account should anyone go back into the building until the emergency services say it is safe to do so.
